Examining Regenerative Real Estate with Izumi Tanaka

The Realtor profession does not have the best reputation. It’s often lumped in with used car salesmen, and is seen as hyper focused on money. And it’s for good reason too. The real estate industry is the epitome of transactional industry that does not give much credence to sustainability or stewardship.

For Izumi Tanaka, however, she sees the real estate industry as having real potential for healing and regeneration. This is quite the nuanced perspective, too, as Izumi was raised in Japan and then spent the better part of her career working in documentary film-making and photography.

Izumi is a practicing Buddhist and sees how the impacts that we make within our daily lives have impacts that go beyond ourselves. She sees the practice of inhabiting our homes as a spiritual endeavor where we must first transform ourselves before we can begin transforming the world.

Attracted to the potential she saw within the real estate industry, Izumi became a Realtor and then achieved the Green Designation from the National Association of Realtors. While she was intent on using this green expertise to help her clients, she says she still felt quite lonely as if no one else cared about the things she did.

That is until she met Latitude. That is when Izumi found a community of other purpose-driven real estate professionals from around the country that shared a common vision. By doing it with others, Izumi finds strength to help infuse her work with mindful living in order to create thriving, sustainable communities.

Izumi is the producer and host of the podcast Home Green Homes and you can see more of her work at izumitanaka.com. She works with buyers and sellers out of the Los Angeles, California area.
