Terra Futura is a regenerative neighborhood intentionally designed to cultivate a deep sense   of community and rooted belonging.

Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the neighborhood features a mix of two and three bedroom duplexes, as well as a few single family homes arranged in distinct clusters, designed to encourage both community connection and privacy. The land boasts permaculture-inspired gardens, shared green spaces, and play areas.

Overview

Guided by ancestral wisdom, and shaped by the incremental actions, Terra Futura is an optimistic experiment in cooperative living that has come to life through the vision of partners Kelsey Wood-Henry and Jack Henry.

Driven by the desire to create a community where they themselves would want to live and raise their family, Kelsey and Jack bought a property in Asheville, North Carolina and began to dream into a homes clustered together where the land is stewarded according to permaculture principals.

The project began to sell it’s first homes in the summer of 2024 with additional homes scheduled to be built out over the next several years. In total, the project will have over 20 homes for both sale and rent.

The neighborhood features a mix of two and three bedroom duplexes, as well as a few single family homes arranged in distinct housing clusters, designed to encourage both community connection and privacy.  

The homes feature a "room-sized" front porch and kitchen windows overlooking the common areas; while private decks offer a serene retreat, facing into the urban temperate rainforest. Each duplex is carefully designed with offset framing standards to ensure shared walls deliver increased soundproofing for a peaceful living experience.

the land

Nestled in the Southern Appalachian mountains, Terra Futura's urban forest is a haven for hawks, woodpeckers, foxes, deer, and fireflies. The diverse array of tree species includes oak, maple, pine, birch, locust, redbud, and poplar. 

The neighborhood is further enriched by shared green spaces, play areas, and permaculture-inspired gardens. These include a planned medicinal garden featuring native species such as spicebush, sweet birch, sassafras, pawpaw, persimmon, mulberry, and serviceberry.

The community

All residents are invited to engage in voluntary shared decision making. This collaborative approach empowers everyone to have a voice in important decisions, enhancing the overall living experience.

Land Acknowledgement

Asheville, North Carolina occupies the historic land of three tribes – the Tsalagi, or Cherokee, the Miccosukee Creek, and the Uchee. Today these groups live on in three tribal nations of the Southeast – the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (in Cherokee, North Carolina); the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida (in Northern Florida); and the Savannah River Band of Uchee Indians (in Savannah, Georgia).
