Book Review: Braiding Sweetgrass

It is popular opinion amongst people that we are the problem; that Mother Nature would do just fine without the human species.

It is hard to argue with that. We live in a dominant culture that is exploitative and extractive where we ignore natural limits.

It’s a sad view that to “save” the earth, we need to eliminate ourselves.

Robin Wall Kimmerer

There is another viewpoint, however, that we highly recommend you look into. It is one that puts forth a deeply regenerative way of viewing the world and how we can interact within it. That is from author and botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer.

In her book “Braiding Sweetgrass”, Kimmerer talks about how we have the opportunity to re-establish our relationship with the earth.

Kimmerer has a rare vantage point that brings together both science and an indigenous worldview. In this incredibly moving book, she poetically tells beautiful stories about how we not only benefit from nature, but how nature benefits from us.

She encourages us to adopt attitudes of gratitude and reciprocity towards ourselves, the earth, and the myriad of species that co-habitat on the planet.

This book will sure top the list as one of your favorites. Be sure to tell us what you think about it by visiting the online Facebook community Regenerative Real Estate.

We also recommend downloading the audio version—Robin Wall Kimmerer narrates the book herself, and her stories in her voice is soothing and healing.
