Metamorphosis: A Day Steeped in Contemplative-Based Social Transformation

Metamorphosis is a gathering of leaders and practitioners in contemplative-based social change

There was a profound recognition among us—that the healing and transformation we aspire to create in our homes, communities, and ecosystems fundamentally rely on the cultivation of inner practices and personal development.

I turn to various methods that support my own growth and capacity building. Therefore, I was eager to spend the day with others who are dedicated to contemplative practices in the pursuit of social change.

After a day filled with guided experiences, stories, art, music, and warm connections, I have a couple of takeaways to inspire your inner contemplation and encourage you to create the change you desire in the world.

Music and stories have alchemical power

I experience internal changes in my perception and quality of being when I hear certain music and stories. They have the power to transform.

Laurie Anderson performed and interacted with us twice during the day, and each time, you could feel the community's sensitivity shifting and becoming more receptive. Our senses were enlivened, and something new became available; we became more receptive to new possibilities.

The same held true for the numerous stories shared throughout the day. As I listened to new stories, I sensed myself creating space for alternative ways of experiencing life. Both the music and stories permitted me to undergo my unique experience of them, altering me without prescribing how I should change or identifying what needed changing within me. A sense of wonder was invoked, and the rest unfolded from there.

There is a recurring call for “indigenous wisdom”

This feels like an archetypal story, remembering how humans find their place in relationship to life and Mother Earth. In this case, my experience of being in circle with Yuria Celidwen and Tiokasin Ghosthorse left me in awe of the deep, humble, direct knowing of relatedness with Mother Earth and the great mystery of creation. The urge to share more words feels like they would pull me away from this experience.

What does this have to do with real estate?

Fair question. For status quo real estate, maybe nothing. But when I consider how to be of service and how to deepen my relationship with the land and all of life that we’re a part of, this feels essential.

One teacher framed “contemplation” as a practice of letting go of constructs that we’ve created to feel in control of our lives and how life impacts us. Letting go of concepts and ways of making sense, allowing us to be with what really is.

From this place, I’m called to expand my view of professionals who I consider ecosystem partners. We have an ecosystem directory with over 80 businesses and practitioners who align with our work and partner with us. I recently added, Break Bread, and I foresee other cultural shape shifters being included in this broader view of partners. I am beginning to connect with some restorative justice workers, non-violent communication teachers, and conflict transformation folks to expand our capacity to be together and experience more capable and empowered community interbeing.

With deep gratitude for the Garrison Institute,

David
